Designer Spotlight: Lauren Oshie

Lauren Oshie, an influencer with a passion for home and design, recently teamed up with Sunbrella and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams to create a family-friendly living space for her three children and hockey player husband, T.J. Oshie.

“I knew we wanted to convert our current family room to a cozier, more inviting space as it’s the area in our home where we spend the majority of our time,” said Oshie. To do this, she selected a simple custom wool rug inspired by friend and designer, Tara Cain, and a sectional from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. “When designing a space, I typically start with one specific item that really inspires me, whether it be a really cool piece of furniture, a unique light fixture or special piece of art and then use that as inspiration to build the overall design concept,” Oshie explained.

Knowing that she needed a family-friendly piece that matched her modern-traditional style, Oshie chose the Haywood sectional in a darker colorway. “The chosen sectional fabric really lends itself to a moody, casual vibe-exactly what we were going for!” said Oshie. “Not to mention it’s so comfortable and durable as it’s made in Sunbrella fabric.”

Oshie selected the sofa through a COVID-friendly virtual design consultation with Michael Erno, Director of Trade and Virtual Design at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. She was pleased with how it went: “I found it to be so helpful to be able to show Michael, my space where the sectional would be going and to bounce ideas off of him. He was key in helping me nail down a fabric and also in ensuring the sofa would fit well into our current space.”

The Oshie family puts Sunbrella’s durability to the test!

Oshie was excited to have found an oversized couch where her family could comfortably cuddle up for movie nights and she knew that incorporating durable fabrics, like those from Sunbrella, was crucial for livability: “I myself am guilty of investing in pieces that are beautiful but are just not practical in homes with pets and children. For instance, furniture made in delicate fabrics that are light and not easily cleaned or furniture pieces that don’t have the depth to really cozy up on,” she said.

Erno recommended using Sunbrella fabric for this project in particular: “It’s a great choice for a home with lots of movement because of the durability. It’s always a ‘win win’ to be able to enjoy a space comfortably and aesthetically.”

The Oshie family chose the Haywood Chaise sectional in Sunbrella’s Costa-Charcoal fabric.

That’s why Oshie chose the Haywood Chaise sectional in Sunbrella’s Costa-Charcoal fabric. “Michael helped nail down the exact style we would go with based on our space. As for the Sunbrella fabric we chose, there were so many gorgeous options. However, for this piece I wanted to go darker and loved how the Costa Charcoal read like a true marled wool. The light flecks in the dark charcoal fabric also tied in the lighter elements of our space.”

With clean, modern lines and a good size, the Haywood sectional worked perfectly to create a family-friendly living room that didn’t sacrifice style for livability.
