New Exhibition and Fabric Collection from Liz Collins

Artist Liz Collins’ new exhibition “Dynamic Expansion” has officially debuted at Ligne Roset’s New York Flagship store via a virtual webinar experience. Viewers can experience a surrealist lounge where the art and furniture are literally cut from the same cloth of vibrating geometric patterns. This exhibition was presented in collaboration with Ligne Roset Contract, Sunbrella Contract, and Pollack.

Liz Collins Dynamic Expansion exhibit at Ligne Roset in New York
Dynamic Expansion is presented in collaboration with Ligne Roset Contract, Sunbrella Contract, and Pollack.

The environment consists of seven suspended paintings above five Ligne Roset Prado sofas upholstered in eclectic, graphic, high-performance Sunbrella Contract fabrics. These original textiles are featured in Liz Collins’s Spring 2021 capsule collection for Pollack and are created from luxe Sunbrella Contract yarns. The mix of classic design elements and bold patterns creates a highly idiosyncratic and unconventional art and design experience.

The three textiles featured in the exhibition are:

  • Gingham Maze — inspired by Collins doodling over a magazine crossword;
  • Drawers — referencing the furniture of Ettore Sottsass;
  • Dynamic Expansion — from which the exhibition takes its name, and which forms the base canvas for each of the seven paintings.

Sunbrella Contract dry melange acrylic and plush acrylic yarns juxtapose a soft hand with the sharp geometric designs of the fabrics, emphasizing textural interest. When applied to the architectural form of the Prado sofa, designed by Christian Werner for Ligne Roset, these textiles create new movement, produce intriguing lines and angles, and invite contemplation of the relationship between comfort and physical space.

hape Shifters in Liz Collins Dynamic Expansion exhibit
Showers of yarn suspend to highlight the interrogations of perspective.

The visual art components, collectively titled Shape Shifters, similarly blur traditional boundaries. The Dynamic Expansion fabric is transformed with paint and showers of yarn to create paintings that explode into sculptures. The forms these Shape Shifters take are ultimately determined by their positioning. Suspended, they subvert the idea of a painting as something for a wall and become like chandeliers. Hung flat at right angles, they embrace the decorative while liquefying color and line. The unique personalities of these paintings–their different moods, different looks, different states of being–further highlight the interrogations of perspective in the installation.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Ligne Roset Contract, Sunbrella Contract, and Pollack, and will run through November 2020.
